Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or composite resin that are designed to look just like the front of your teeth. The dentists at Swinney Morton Dental permanently bond veneers to your teeth to cover up cosmetic imperfections, improve the shape or alignment of your teeth, and give you a more even and symmetrical smile.

Because porcelain and composite resin have a similar color and translucency as natural tooth enamel, your veneers will improve the aesthetics of your smile while maintaining its natural-looking appearance. Dental veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures available today because they can fix multiple cosmetic defects at once and involve a very minimally invasive procedure.

What cosmetic imperfections can veneers improve?

With dental veneers, the team at Swinney Morton Dental can fix teeth that are:

  • Cracked
  • Chipped
  • Broken
  • Oddly shaped
  • Too short
  • Crooked
  • Stained

Dental veneers can even give you a smile that is properly aligned without having to get orthodontic treatment.

What are the steps involved in getting veneers?

First, you have a consultation to discuss your cosmetic goals and select a size, shape, and color for your veneers. The team at Swinney Morton Dental offers both no-prep and traditional veneers. They can help you choose the best option for your smile.

No-prep veneers

No-prep veneers are made with a composite ceramic material called IPS e.max® from Ivoclar Vivodent®. These veneers are very thin and don’t require that any natural enamel be removed from your teeth.

No-prep veneers would be a good choice for you if you have minor cosmetic imperfections and you’re looking for a cosmetic procedure that’s less invasive and easy to reverse.

Traditional veneers

Traditional veneers are made with porcelain. They require several trips to the office to be completed.

At your first appointment, your dentist makes room for your veneers by preparing your teeth, which involves shaving off a very thin layer of enamel. They use a digital scanner to take an impression of your smile, which they send off to a lab that fabricates your veneers for the exact specifications of your mouth.

You wear a set of temporary veneers while the lab crafts your permanent ones. When your permanent veneers are ready, you come back to Swinney Morton Dental so that the team can permanently bond them to your teeth. You walk out of the office that day with a brighter and more beautiful smile.
